The Honeydripper band was formed in Norwich, England, in early 2009 after a chance meeting between singer/blues harp blower Johnny Boy and veteran bassman Mike The Bassdaddy, both lovers of postwar blues music. Since that time, and through a number of line-up changes, Honeydripper has become a firm blues favourite at venues throughout Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, with more than one hundred successful gigs clocked up to date.
The band's musicians past and present and all our outstanding guest players have served their time with numerous previous blues-based bands over many years and know the music well.
The “Honeydripper” name has a long and honourable pedigree in the broad arena of blues-based music-making. Although probably best-known in recent times for the title of the excellent Danny Glover film, starring a number of bona fide blues legends and itself an allegorical work concerning the evolution of early rock’n’roll, in fact the soubriquet goes back many decades into blues history.
In the years following WW2, West Coast US jump band leader Joe Liggins dubbed his proto-R&B outfit “The Honeydrippers”, while blues and barrelhouse pianist Roosevelt Sykes had originally picked up the nickname while recording in St Louis as long ago as the 1920s. According to some accounts, Sykes received the appellation because of his prowess as a lovin’ man, while others believed it was earned because of his sweet nature and kind personality. The members of the East Anglian Honeydripper band are all clearly sweet-natured and are kindness personified, so “Honeydripper” was an ideal choice for the group name. Whether any of them have prowess in other areas is not presently known . . .
The Honeydripper band usually find a good audience response wherever they play, frequently returning to appreciative venues time and again, and look forward to bringing rockin’ R&B and soulful blues music in the time-honoured manner to the good people of East Anglia for many years to come . . . book them for your venue or private function, or catch them at a bar or club near you. Lovers of fine blues music certainly won’t be disappointed with this band . . .
